Electric bikes and scooters: all the rage!

If you’ve been on the streets in New York City recently, you have surely noticed the increased presence of electric vehicles, including battery-powered scooters and bikes.

This is due to a legislative change that allowed the use of throttle-powered vehicles on all NYC streets. This comes as a relief to many who rely on these types of vehicles for transportation, including people who want to avoid public transit because of COVID, as well as delivery drivers and couriers. Prior to this time, people in possession of electric bicycles or electric scooters faced confiscation and/or fines of up to $500!

The decision to allow the use of these electric vehicles has fostered significant progress. The people of New York are now free to travel more efficiently and freely on the streets and get to where they need to be quicker. Bicycle rental businesses have also taken up the scooters to reach more customers and enhance tour experiences. Most importantly, people who use these vehicles professionally will no longer be penalized for doing their jobs.

As electric bicycles and scooters grow in popularity, we will need to be aware of our surroundings and follow traffic laws to keep everyone safe and minimize accidents. We always recommend that anyone that rides an electric bike or scooter always wears a helmet regardless of their age or experience, and that anyone who rides at night use their lights.
